25th edition of the "ARC Transoceanic Race"

Every year, at the end of the racing season in the Mediterranean and northern Europe, hundreds of boats get ready for the long transoceanic ARC race. Gran Canaria has traditionally been the starting point thanks to the great conditions at the Las Palmas marina and the island’s good weather.
Boats headed for the Atlantic take a deep breath before they enter the ocean, on the island of Gran Canaria, not only loading provisions before they make the most of the trade winds born in the Canary Islands, but also so that their crews can make the most of the sunshine found here in the middle of winter, which acts like a vitamin before they set out on the long Atlantic crossing.
In November, like every year, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the starting point for the ARC, when it becomes a great Atlantic marina. Boats of all kinds from over twenty countries, from smaller vessels less than 30 feet long to large 70-feet cruisers. They all head for St Lucia in the Caribbean.
This event is a huge meeting point for sailors from a multitude of countries. It has become an occasion which enhances the camaraderie among hundreds of sailors from the world over who arrive on the island throughout November, when the marina becomes one of the most lively venues in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Andreu Mateu is the first Spanish rower to attempt to cross the Atlantic alone and without aid. This adventure will mean that he has to row for 12 hours a day for 90 days to travel the 5000 km between La Gomera and Antigua.
